Pursuing the kingdom

Never Enough

The song from The Greatest Showman plays in my head often. Mostly just because it’s a beautiful and moving song. Party because of the emotions exhibited by the singer, and partly because of the moment where it comes in the movie.

And while I love the song, it has mostly been a sad song. It seems to be the cry of the discontent. A song of realization that nothing will fulfill. The song implies that without that one person, nothing is enough, but I forget the song is about the one person. I hear the cry for fulfillment that will never be filled.

As I pondered this the other day, I realized that this is my song. Never enough. I will never be satisfied. The hole in my heart will always be bigger than what things, events, or even people can fill. Here’s the amazing part though. If I aim to collect it all, I end with nothing and remain unfulfilled. If I give up everything to be with the creator of all things, the one who owns it all, I get EVERYTHING.

I’m reminded of the quote:

Aim at Heaven and you will get Earth ‘thrown in’: aim at Earth and you will get neither.

C.S. Lewis – The Joyful Christian

The other that comes to mind:

If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.

C.S. Lewis

Suddenly this song has been transformed from a sad song into my own anthem. It reminds me that I do have everything. The things around me will never be enough, and I will whole-heartedly seek Him who created it all. Only in Him will I be satisfied.
