Memorial For George “Art” Cushing

My grandpa lived a long and amazing life. While the pain of knowing I’m not going to see him again in this life is just, excruciating, it is so much fun looking back on what an amazing man he was. Born in 1925, he saw a lot of change in his lifetime. He served in the 103rd Cactus Division in World War II and saw and was forced to do things that he rarely spoke about even in his last few years. Serving in the infantry he was awarded the Purple Heart, two Bronze stars and a Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He was discharged in December 1945. An electrician for most of his life, he recently was honored by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 60 years as a member. He leaves behind 2 daughters, 2 sons, 9 grandchildren, and 21 grandchildren. I’ve got many stories of things that happened to my grandpa and how he reacted with incredible honor and integrity, and everyone I meet that knew him as an electrician expresses profound respect for him.

My family asked if I would create a video slideshow for the memorial service. I am honored to do what I can to celebrate my grandpa’s life and am grateful for the opportunity. I have found though that digging through the pictures and listening to many different songs both celebrating life and mourning loss have made this a difficult project. My keyboard has a few new tear stains as a result. Though tough to get through, I think it turned out nice and I hope it would make grandpa proud. I’ll sure miss him and I’ll always look to him as an example of someone who was a man of integrity to his very last day.
